The Spear Programme launches in Wales

Resurgo is excited to announce the launch of the Spear Programme in South Wales.

Delivered in partnership with Citizen Church, Spear aims to support local young people to overcome the challenges they face and be equipped with the skills and mindset they need to thrive in employment.

Launching today in Cardiff, Citizen Church is welcoming a group of young people pursuing employment or further education. Cardiff is a city of contrast, with areas of wealth alongside those of deprivation. Resurgo’s local partner, Citizen Church, is located just streets away from a number LSOAs (lower super output areas) amongst the most deprived in Wales, including Plasnewydd, which is among the 10% most deprived in terms of employment1.

In this its 20th year, Resurgo is particularly excited that Spear South Wales marks the first location to deliver Spear outside of England. After initially launching in Cardiff, the centre will look to gradually expand its reach to the whole South Wales region, including Pontypridd and the Valleys, to serve young people across Wales, which experiences the fourth lowest employment rate of all the UK regions2

Spear South Wales will be delivering Resurgo’s new streamlined version of Spear, designed to make the programme more accessible to a wider spectrum of partners, and in turn young people who may otherwise not be able to access the support they need.

Young people will receive four weeks of in-depth employment coaching, focussing on practical skills such as interview preparation and CV writing, as well as transformative coaching around mindset and attitude. This is followed by a further six months of personalised follow-on support.

Lily Webb, Spear South Wales Centre Manager, says, “Part of our mission statement as a church is to breach loneliness, and so we feel passionately about connecting with the youth in South Wales and providing space for them to thrive. South Wales, particularly the Valleys, has seen generations of deprivation and poverty (around 23% of the population live in income poverty). Citizen are so excited to partner with Resurgo to engage and encourage young people to reach their full potential.”

NOTES:
